The Mexican Community Gathers in New York to protest the deaths of the Mexican 43

_DSC0544In response to recent news, more than 200 people gathered in Union Square in New York on Sunday. They were seeking justice for 43 missing student teachers, now considered dead and demanded an end to the violence and corruption that has dominated Mexico.

The students disappeared on September 26th while  travelling by bus to a protest. During the search, several mass graves were discovered. According to authorities, gang members have confessed to killing the students and burning their bodies in a mass grave.

Protesters spread out banners and missing posters in Union Square that named the missing students.  Photos of each of the students were strung across the park on a rope. Many spoke passionately of the situation in Mexico and a traditional Mexican dance troupe performed. Behind the demonstration, groups of young people splattered t-shirts with red paint and drew portraits of the missing 43 students. Others created handmade signs. Several of the signs referenced the hashtag  #YaMeCansé  which means, “Enough, I am tired”. The hashtag came about after Attorney General Jesus Murillo made the statement in the midst of being questioned  during a press conference about the murder of the students. The statement was followed by explosive protests in Mexico.
